How to manually backup Firefox bookmarks to CD, Flash Drive or Hard Drive
Mozilla Firefox stores all your bookmarks and passwords etc in a “Profile” folder. Your bookmarks are stored in a file within this folder called bookmarks.html
To get access to this file so that you can copy it to a CD ROM, Flash Drive or External Hard Drive you will need to navigate to your Firefox Profile.
In Windows XP you can find the folder at:
- C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Firefox Profile name>\(your Firefox profile name is probably unknown to you … usually it is a random string of eight characters – you’ll probably just have to guess at this point, but it should be fairly obvious
)
Now all you need to do is copy the bookmarks.html file to your desired back up media.
If you want more details about backing up to either Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Thunderbird then a good place to visit is:
Or alternatively you could try a Mozilla backup application such as MozBackup.

Everything went fine until I got to the actual file. What do I open the file with?? Using Ff just gives me a webpage showing the bookmarks.I am no closer to having the bookmarks on CD for a reinstall of XP.
You don’t need to open the file Mike, just copy it to the location of your firefox profile.
I mention the location in the post, if you missed it here it is…..
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\\(your Firefox profile name is probably unknown to you … usually it is a random string of eight characters – you’ll probably just have to guess at this point, but it should be fairly obvious
